Ruling party candidate arrested in Galle

Galle Police Monday morning took a candidate of the ruling United
Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Nishantha Muthuhettigama into custody
for a number of charges, including unlawful assembly and damaging of
property. Meanwhile, a special team appointed by the Inspector General
of Police, Jayantha Wickremaratne, rushed to Galle to investigate
into the credibility of the accusation made by Nishantha
Muthuhettigama to media against the police and the
Presidential Security Division (PSD), Police Spokesman Senior DIG
Nimal Mediwake told media.
Nishantha Muthuhettigama had made damaging statements to the media
about the police service and the PSD and IGP. He called the
police service corrupt and had also charged that he had been attacked
by police personnel who came in sixteen jeeps of the PSD in Udugama area
last week. Muthuhettigama had been arrested around 10.50 a.m Monday over an incident in which he had visited the office of Anarkali Aakarsha in
Galle together with a large crowd of people and caused damage to the
property. Police sources said Nishantha Muthuhettigama had made damaging
statements to the media about both the police service and the PSD and
IGP.
