Resettlement programs for civilians who returned to the peninsula have not succeeded the Jaffna NGO consortium told a UN advisor who was on an official visit to the peninsula yesterday. The consortium told him that many families which returned to Jaffna following the government's offer to resettle them in their home areas have been left in the lurch.
These families have not been permitted to resettle. The consortium pointed out that essential goods are not yet readily available in Jaffna and that unemployment among youth is high. The Jaffna NGOs told the UN advisor that local industries and the fisheries sector are still in ruins. The consortium discussed the planned take over of 12 thousand acres around the Palaly SLA base complex with the visiting UN advisor.
