Seven killed in Tiger ambush

Seven Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed and 15 wounded when the Liberation Tigers attacked an Army tractor with rocket propelled grenades (RPG) after activating a claymore mine at Madukulam on the 2nd mile post along Poovarasankulam-Iranai Iluppaikulam road around 5.30 p.m. yesterday, sources said.
A group of soldiers were travelling in the tractor from Poovarasankulam, about 11 miles west of Vavuniya town along Mannar road towards Iranai Iluppaikulam, an area which was recently captured by the SLA in 'Operation Rana Gosa'. The wounded soldiers have been admitted to Anuradhapura hospital. This is the third attack in the Vavuniya region during the past 6 days. 13 security forces personnel have been killed. On March 17, 4 homeguards and 3 policemen were killed and one home guard was wounded when a claymore mine attack at Dickwela in the army controlled area about 8 k.m. east of Vavuniya town. On March 19, two soldiers were killed and 3 were wounded in a claymore mine attack at Kanagrayankulam also in the army controlled area about 33 k.m. north of Vavuniya town along the A-9 trunk road. SLA sources said LTTE units which had infiltrated into the newly captured areas had carried out these attacks.
