Foreign Ambassadors including Indian High Commissioner visit Jaffna

Newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Mr. Ashok K. Kantha is on a two-day visit to Jaffna while the Ambassadors of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and South Korea to Sri Lanka paid a sudden visit to Jaffna Wednesday accompanied by high officials from their embassies, sources in Jaffna said. The sudden visits of foreign emissaries to Jaffna prior to the Presidential election in January have raised questions among the residents of Jaffna peninsula, the sources added.

The Indian High Commissioner arriving at Palaali met with the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) high officials at Palaali before coming to Jaffna town.

He first held a meeting with government officials in Jaffna Secretariat and later worshipped at Nalloor Kanthasuvami Koayil where he met the Chief Priest of Nalloor Aatheenam, Srilasiri Choamaachaariyaar Suvaamikal, at his official residence.

Mr. Ashok K. Kantha then paid a visit to Jaffna Municipal Council where he held talks with Jaffna Mayor, Ms. Yogeswary Patkunam.

His next visit was to Jaffna University where he discussed with the Vice-chancellor and the deans of the faculties in Jaffna University.

Mr. Kantha is expected to meet the representatives of several organizations and institutions in Jaffna peninsula Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Ambassadors from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and South Korea who arrived in Jaffna Wednesday first paid a visit to Jaffna Public Library and then met with the government high officials in Jaffna Secretariat.

The visiting emissaries are interested in investment and trade enterprises in Jaffna peninsula on behalf of the country they represent in Sri Lanka, Jaffna Secretariat sources said.
