Five Tigers killed in Paranthan -SLA

The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) launched a limited operation, code named Tiger Hunt, from the Elephant Pass-Paranthan base complex in the early hours of the morning yesterday.

SLA Headquarters sources in Colombo said that five Tigers were killed by troops when they attacked the positions of the LTTE ahead of the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) of the base.

They added that several look out posts and bunkers of the LTTE were destroyed by troops engaged in Operation Tiger Hunt.

A military analyst in Colombo said that the army launches such offensives to prevent any build-up by the Liberation Tigers in the area that could pose an immediate threat to the Elephant Pass base.

Meanwhile the Counter Subversive Unit (CSU) of the Sri Lankan Police in Mannar produced nine youth in the Mannar district court arrested in connection with the shooting of three Policeman yesterday. Court sources said that the nine youth appeared to have been severely assaulted.

Some of them had come from the LTTE controlled areas of the Vanni on private business.

The CSU moved in court for remanding the youth until April 5.

The acting district judge for Mannar, Mr. Caius Feldano, however, remanded the youth until March 30.

An application for bail by M.P Farook who appeared for the boys was refused by the court.
