Rajapaksa awards defected UNP MPs with ministerial portfolios

Two parliamentarians who resigned from the main opposition United National Party (UNP) Wednesday morning were appointed minister and deputy minister in the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government led by the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the evening.

UNP MPs Johnston Fernando and India Bandaranaike were elected on the UNP ticket at the last general elections from Kurunagala district in North Western (Wyamba) province.

MP Johnston Fernando was sworn in as Minister for Land Development and Ranaviru Welfare while MP Indika Bandaranaike was made the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources.

Johnston Fernando and Indika Bandaranaike declared at a press conference Wednesday that Mahinda Rajapaksa had 40 years of political experience, but General (retd) Sarath Fonseka in the contrary was a politically inexperienced candidate for presidency.
