Thirumavalavan urges Tamils to refrain from celebrating Pongkal this year
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 12 January 2010, 14:30 GMT]
Thol Thirumavalavan, the leader of the Viduthalai Chi'ruththaika'l Kadchi
(VCK) in a message appealed the Tamils in Tamil Nadu to refrain from
celebrating Thai Pongkal to express distress and agony on behalf of Eelam Tamils
who have been suffering in the internment camps of Sri Lanka Army
after the brutal massacre of their loved ones by the Sri Lanka Army in
their own soil.
The message from Thirumava'lavan follows: The blood shed by Eelam Tamils has not dried up yet. Sinhala
chauvinist regime during the same period last year massacred hundreds
of thousands of Eelam Tamils in their own soil. The Sri Lankan Army killed
more than fifty thousand Tamils, freedom fighters and their leaders
when they were coming forward with white flags. We, Viduthalai Chiruthaikal, conducted a fasting for four days
condemning the atrocities of the Sri Lankan chauvinist forces from
January 15 to January 18 last year in Ma'raimalai Nakar in Tamil Nadu. We
still suffer from the calamity and sorrow Eelam Tamils underwent.
Amidst, the father of LTTE leader passed away suddenly in a military
camp of the Sri Lanka Army on January 6 this year. To show our solidarity and sympathy to hundreds of thousands of Eelam
Tamils who have been still suffering with the loss of their loved ones
in the brutal war and atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan chauvinist
forces and the demise of the father of LTTE leader, I humbly appeal to members of VCK and people of Tamil Nadu to refrain from celebrating Pongkal this year.
