Nearly 300 teacher trainees of Koapaay Government Teachers’ Training College (GTTC) began a boycott of lectures Tuesday demanding better basic facilities and the removal of their principal alleging that he is involved in malpractices swindling college resources, sources in Jaffna said. Ninety-five percentage of the teacher trainees are Muslims from Eastern Province of whom many had sought refugee with Tamil families in the peninsula because of the lack of basic facilities, the sources added.
The protesting students further alleged that the principal of their institution had even appropriated the possessions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who had been lodged in the college hostel. The boycotting teacher trainees demand immediate basic facilities and the transfer of their principal. The Muslim trainees said that though they had been brought from Eastern Province promising that the Koappaay Training College had all the facilities. The absence of any Muslim lecturers in the Training College is one of the glaring needs besides this is the insufficient number of lecturers, the protesting trainees said. They added that the boycott will continue until their demands are met.
