Infighting leads to arrest of UPFA candidate

The Puththalam Police Friday arrested a ruling UPFA candidate Sanath Nishantha on a complaint that he had assaulted the son of another UPFA candidate Minister Neomal. The suspect was produced in Puththalam Court and ordered remand till next Monday. The assault took place on Wednesday night, sources in Puththalam said.

The suspect Mr. Nishantha had earlier warned Mr. Perera’s supporters to refrain from campaigning in his strongholds. Mr. Perera, a former UNP member is contesting under the UPFA ticket, from the same district.

Meanwhile over 192 persons have been remanded in connection with election related violence while another 240 suspects are at large in connection with such incidents, DIG Gamini Navaratne told media Friday.

Most of the incidents have been reported from the Central Province and are related to infighting within political parties, he said.
