Mano Ganesan complains on violence in Nawalapitiya
[TamilNet, Thursday, 15 April 2010, 18:59 GMT]
Mano Ganesan, the leader of the Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) and a
candidate of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) Thursday
complained that government party supporters have unleashed terror
against his supporters in Nawalapitiya in the Kandy district where
political parties and independent groups have stepped up their
campaign for the re-poll that scheduled to be held on April 20.
The
poll held on April 8 was annulled by the Commissioner of Elections due
to election malpractices carried out by supporters of two government
ministers. Mano Ganesan said his two campaign teams came under attack this
evening in two separate places in Nawalapitiya. Two of his supporters
were injured and two vehicles used for campaigning damaged. However Gamini Navaratne, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in
charge of election desk in the police headquarters told media later
that he did not receive any such complaints. The situation in
Nawalapitiya is very calm, he added. But, Mano Ganesan said that Nawalapitiya had been affected by
violence and he feared that he could be attacked at any time. He added
he had discussed with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mahinda
Balasuriya on his concerns regarding the need to increase the number of his security personnel.
