Body parts collected for analyses[TamilNet, Thursday, 15 April 1999, 18:34 GMT]The remains of burnt human body parts were collected by the Vavuniya Police and have been despatched to Colombo for the Judicial Medical Officer's report, Vavuniya court sources said today. The remains of a human head and legs were found at Eratperiyakulam, about 4 km south of Vavuniya town, near the Sri Lankan Army base. The Vavuniya Police said this afternoon that Sri Lankan Airforce Personnel had notified them on April 13 of finding ashes and the remains of human bones while they were on a clearing operation near the airstrip. The Police party led by the Officer In Charge of Crimes Vavuniya, H.Ovitigama, said that the remains had been collected on the order of M.Sithampalam, the Acting Magistrate for Vavuniya and sent to Colombo for an analytical report through the District Medical Officer. He said that the burning probably took place a few days ago but that the police were unable to say at present whether the remains belonged to one person or many persons. He added that inquiries are in process. Meanwhile sources said about twenty youths from the villages of Eachankulam and Kalmadu, in the Iranai Iluppaikulam area, were arrested by the security forces in a cordon and search operation after the area was captured by government forces last month in an operation code named Rana Gosha. One of them was a young girl said the sources. Four youths were detained and taken to Vavuniya for further inquiries, while others were released later in the day, one source said.
