“We call upon all Tamil political parties, school communities and public organizations including Non-governmental organizations in Jaffna peninsula to jointly raise their voices against the continuing violent crimes of abduction and killing for ransom, sexual abuse of women, robbery, extortion and violence targeting particularly university undergrads and school students,” Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) said in a message to local media Friday. “We have already lost many fellow students and we request all parents to safeguard their children,” JUSU further appealed in the message. JUSU also called for greater caution and awareness of the gravity of the situation.
As Jaffna peninsula could be reached by land from all parts of the country many types of men visit Jaffna and it is possible for anyone of them to commit crimes in Jaffna peninsula, the report said. Jaffna peninsula is witnessing cultural deterioration besides the calculated destruction of our traditional landmarks and monuments as never before, it added. Violence against student community is a schemed action so as to damage the educational standard in the peninsula, JUSU said. People are gripped in fear and anxiety as students and young people are abducted and killed for ransom, killings, robbery, extortion and sexual abuse of women staying alone in the peninsula are escalating at an alarming rate while the law enforcement authorities do nothing to stop the crimes or to arrest the perpetrators, the report further said.
