SL parliament to debate emergency extension motion Monday

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister is to table a motion Monday seeking the
approval of the parliament to extend the State of Emergency for
another month. The State of Emergency is in force since 12 August
2005. Every month it is being extend with the approval of the
parliament. Opposition parties including the main opposition United National Party
(UNP) and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by Janatha Vimukthi
Peramuna (JVP) have decided to oppose the emergency extension motion.
Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC)
would also vote against the extension motion, political sources said. The committee stage discussion of the 2010 budget is to begin Monday
when the parliament convenes in the morning. However, the Prime Minister is expected to table the emergency extension motion in parliament before
committee stage budget discussion begins. Committee stage discussion
is expected to conclude on Friday with the final voting of the 2010
budget.
