Senior stalwarts of the crisis ridden United National Party (UNP) is set to commence discussions in an attempt to defuse the growing tensions over the party’s leadership crisis, the Sinhala newspaper Lankadeepa said today. Accordingly, a committee comprising party seniors Tissa attanayake, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Joseph Micheal Perera and deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya are scheduled to meet shortly to discuss the issues facing the party.
Jayasuriya was quoted telling the Lankadeepa that, “if there is a problem within the party, steps should be taken to ensure that the problem is thrashed out within the walls of Sirikotha (the UNP
Headquarters) and it should not be taken out of the party office walls.” The UNP deputy leader also elaborated that the primary reason for the appointment of this committee is to try and iron out differences within the party among members leaving little room for internal conflicts which is widely believed as affecting the party’s support base as well.
