UNP to call for implementation of Right to Information Act

Ranil Wickramasinghe, leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) is to table a motion calling for the implementation of the Right to Information Act when parliament meets Tuesday August 3 afternoon, according to UNP spokesman parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatileka told a press conference in Colombo Monday afternoon.

Karunatileka said that the media and the public had the right to know what exactly was happening in their country. The UNP led UNF made the necessary arrangements to draft the Freedom of Information Bill in 2002. The UNP was unable to present it to parliament as then President Chandrika Kumaratunga prematurely dissolved the UNP government in 2004.
