2 Indian High Commission officials on sudden visit to Jaffna

Two key officials of the Indian High Commission to Sri Lanka in Colombo visited Jaffna Monday and held talks with high officers of Sri Lanka Amy (SLA) and police in Jaffna Secretariat. Northern Province Governor Major Gen. G. A. Chandrasiri and Jaffna Government Agent, Ms. Imelda Sukumar participated in this meeting, sources in Jaffna said. The visit of the Indian officials had not been announced and local media was not allowed to cover the meeting.

The visiting Indian officials discussed security situation in Jaffna peninsula and resettlement of uprooted civilians, a police officer who participated in the meeting said.

The police officer added that the visiting Indian High Commission officials had expressed satisfaction on the resettlement measures taken by Sri Lanka government.

The sudden and secret visit in the context of Indian Prime Minister's recent announcement that an emissary from India will be sent to Sri Lanka shortly to study the security measures in Jaffna peninsula as well as the resettlement of uprooted civilians, is seen as an important turn of event, by political observers in Jaffna.

It is not known whether the visiting Indian High Commission officers will visit Vanni where the resettled uprooted civilians suffer without adequate assistance either from Sri Lanka government or other humanitarian organizations, sources in Ki'linochchi said.
