The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) detained Thatparanathan Sivarooban, 19, a student of Stanly College in Jaffna who was living in the house from which two Jaffna University Undergraduates were taken into custody last Thursday by the army. The two undergraduates were released by the army yesterday.
On Thursday, the army had looked for Sivarooban as well when it arrested the two undergraduates. Sivarooban had been away in Neervely to visit his father at the time. The army had told the house owners that the youth should report to the brigade on his return. His father therefore took him to the 51-2 brigade in Jaffna town yesterday. Sivarooban was detained by the army for interrogation here. Meanwhile, a mentally retarded person who had accidentally intruded into the SLA's high security zone on Post Office Road in Cahakachcheri was shot and critically wounded in the early hours of the morning around 3 a.m. by army sentries. He was dead on admission to the Jaffna hospital. The person appears to be middle aged said a hospital source this afternoon.
