Attempt to misuse resettled women in Vanni foiled

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians Saravanabavan and Sritharan intervened and stopped Sunday the attempt of a private company from Kandy in Ki'linochchi town enticing young women recently allowed to resettle in Vanni, with job opportunities in South Sri Lanka with attractive salaries. The parliamentarians, on suspicion raised by local people about the true intent of the company, visited the enlisting place in front of Ki'linochchi Government Secretariat and prevented the unsuspecting young women being taken away to the South.

The private company from Kandy had announced that jobs were available to young women in the garment industries in the South.

Both parliamentarians pointed out that the young women may face the risk of being misused by the company which was found not to have any legal permission from Sri Lanka government authorities to enlist persons for employment.

The private company from Kandy would not have attempted to take the young women without the knowledge of police and Sri Lanka Army (SLA) personnel who are on constant watch over Ki'linochchi town, parliamentarian Sritharan said.

Among the thousands of destitute resettled families in Vanni, women who had lost their husbands or other earning male members of their families, killed or arrested and detained by SLA, find hard to feed their family and are easily drawn into this type of traps, he added.

Meanwhile, it has become public that Sri Lanka government has employed the former women cadres of Liberation Tigers held in prisons in garment industries paying them next to nothing.
