The Galle Magistrate Monday ordered surety bail for the two
parliamentarians Vijitha Herat and Ajith Kumara of the Democratic
National Alliance (DNA) led by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)
produced on a charge of assaulting police officers. Each
parliamentarian was ordered to sign a bond in a sum of Rupees
200,000/=.
They were arrested when they went to lodge a complaint at the Galle
police after police attacked a DNA protest rally in the town last week
demanding the release of Sarath Fonseka, former Commander of the Sari
Lanka Army now in the custody of the Sri Lanka Navy since his defeat
at the last presidential election held in January this year. Both
parliamentarians were ordered to appear in court on October 18.
