The main opposition United National Party (UNP) Friday appointed a
committee to formulate a scheme to contest the forthcoming
local government election that is expected to be held in December this
year or January next year, UNP Chairman, Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, a
senior parliamentarian representing the North Western Province, said.
He added that UNP’s aim is to enter the local government as a strong party.
Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said that UNP deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya
has been appointed as the chairman of the said committee that comprises of
parliamentarians Tissa Attanayake, UNP general Secretary and Joseph
Michael Perera, opposition whip in parliament. The UNP is to prepare its strategy to face the forthcoming local
government elections on the report submitted by the committee, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera said. Meanwhile, Karu Jayasuriya Sunday dismissed a news report that power
struggle is going on in the UNP saying that it is the ruling party that
is now facing power struggle and not the UNP.
