Sources at the Northeast Provincial Council (NEPC) said that an agreement to implement a World Bank agricultural development programme for the Northeast will be signed in Washington in July once it has been approved by the President, Chandrika Kumaratunga.
The project will be managed by the NEPC and the agreement will be signed by the chief secretary to the PC on behalf of the whole council, the sources said. Through the scheme restoration work will be carried out on 800 reservoirs in the provincial area outside of the Jaffna peninsula. The sources said that the ICRC had agreed to supervise restoration work in LTTE controlled areas approved by the Ministry of Defence. A delegation from the World Bank that arrived in Colombo had discussions with senior government and provincial council officials. The Governor of the NEPC, officials from the ICRC, UNHCR and Sri Lankan Military also participated in the discussion.
