Election campaign brings new promises

The present government was conducting the war in a proper manner unlike in the past UNP governments, said the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge when addressing her first propaganda meeting for the southern provincial council election scheduled to be held on June 10.
The meeting was held at Mawattegama in the Hiniduma electorate, today evening, the State-run Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation said in its night news bulletin. The President added that her government had assumed the responsibility of bringing the war to an end. She expressed confidence that the war would be brought to an end and peace would be restored in the country shortly. She added that a reasonable solution would be found to the ethnic problem. The Leader of the United National Party, Ranil Wickremasinghe also inaugurated his election propaganda this evening, the radio said. He addressed a meeting at Thihagoda junction in the Kamburupitiya electorate.
