The Commissioner of Examinations has admitted that conducting administration in Tamil in his department has almost come to a standstill due to severe shortage of staff who could transact in Tamil.
The Commissioner Mr.R.M.P.V.Amarakone told a delegation of the Ceylon Tamil Teachers' Union that he had no power to recruit staff who could transact business in Tamil language, on casual basis. The delegation was led by CTTU's President Mr.S.Kumarakuruthasan. The delegation brought to the notice of the Commissioner that the Department of Examinations had already distributed model question papers for the subjects- Science and Maths- under the new G.C.E.O/L syllabus to Sinhala medium schools. But upto now model question papers for science and maths had not been distributed to Tamil medium schools. The Commissioner of Examinations admitted that it was due to the shortage of Tamil staff in the department. He assured the delegation that he would take immediate steps to muster all available Tamil staff under him to prepare model question papers and be distributed to Tamil medium schools within two weeks.
