SL judiciary, Police in Jaffna respond to stand of GA

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 05 January 2011, 01:26 GMT]
The High Court Judge and judicial district judges of Jaffna convened a meeting of police officials in the Jaffna district Tuesday at the High Court premises to discuss the escalating killings, abductions, robberies and threats by armed squads. The details of the discussions would be revealed to the media in due course, officials said. The judiciary tightening its control over law and order situation is widely expected. On Monday, the SL government agent in Jaffna, Mrs Imelda Sugumar, accused the police for inaction and corruption and preferred further induction of occupying SL military in policing. However, the judges decided to discuss matters with the police. The police will convene a public meeting at Veerasingham Hall in Jaffna, Friday, seeking public opinion.

The public, SL government officials and civil representatives could participate in the meeting on Friday and could come out with their problems, opinion and suspicions about case proceedures, the police superintendent of Jaffna said Tuesday.

In a press meet Monday, the SL-GA Mrs. Sugumar said that the police had not functioned in appropriate ways in the killings, abductions etc., and said that she had personally noticed the inaction and lack of patrolling by the police.

Meanwhile, there is strong public opinion in Jaffna against further deployment of the occupying SL military in policing, as there are overwhelming experiences of the past about atrocities of the genocidal military.

By creating an excuse of law and order situation, institutionalising military rule has found much opposition among the public. However colonial the rule is, the civil administration should deal only with the police is the public opinion, according to media circles in Jaffna.

The SL police is also said to be against deploying the SL military on the streets.
