Colombo ignores uprooted Tamils of Champoor in IDP camps

Uprooted Tamil families from Champoor village in Moothoor East in Trincomalee district during military offensive launched by the Sri Lanka Army in April 2006 and sheltered in welfare centres at Ki'liveddi, Ma'natcheanai and Paddiththidal have not been supplied with dry ration relief for the last two months by government. On Thursday activists of the Canada-Moothoor Development Association distributed some relief to them that could enough for their one day need.

496 families are staying in the IDP camps called ‘welfare centres’ as they are not allowed by the SLA to return to their traditional villages, declared as High Security Zone after the war.

The families are struggling to find even a meal per day for their survival.

Adverse weather that prevails in the area has also rendered many of the uprooted people, who depend on daily wage jobs, without work.

Pregnant mothers and children among the uprooted families undergo severe hardships in obtaining medicine and other nutritious foods for them.
