Almost 3000 petitioners sue Police; NGO's urge release of Sri Lanka Red Cross (SLRC) official and Identity Cards taken from bus passengers.
Almost 3000 petitioners sue PoliceAlmost 3000 fundamental rights cases have been filed in the Sri Lankan courts against the Police, said police sources. In 125 cases the judgement were against the police, and the Police Department has paid 650,000 Rupees as compensation to the petitioners. According to the sources 200 officers were involved in the cases where the police were ordered to pay compensation. (1 US $ is approximately 70 Rupees)
NGO's urge release of SLRC officialAn NGO consortium has sent a memorandum to the Sri Lankan Government urging the release of Vavuniya SLRC official, Mr. Sivanthan Kishore. Mr. Kishore was arrested by the SLA in Vavuniya on April 27 and is currently being detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. A committee of nine members has been appointed at the Vavuniya SLRC annual meeting to campaign for the release of Mr. Kishore.
