The elections monitoring group, the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV), said that a total of 91 election related violent incidents have been reported so far from the Galle and Matara districts in the Southern province.
Elections to the Southern Provincial Council (PC) are scheduled to be held on June 10. Complaints have been received against the ruling People's Alliance (PA) party, the opposition United National Party (UNP) and the left wing People's Liberation Party (JVP). "The PA has been cited as the alleged perpetrator in 44 (48.35%) incidents and the UNP and JVP in 12 (13.19%) and 3 (3.3%) incidents respectively," said the statement released by the group. According to the statement the number of incidents in which the use of firearms has been recorded is low compared with the Provincial Council elections held earlier this year. "In the 91 incidents reported in this election, firearms have been identified in 09. All nine incidents involving firearms have taken place in the Galle district," said the CMEV.
