Thirukovil refugees ask to go home
[TamilNet, Monday, 31 May 1999, 16:10 GMT]
One thousand and sixty seven Tamil families who for the past nine years have been living in four refugee camps in the Thirukovil division of the Amparai district have asked the authorities to take immediate steps to resettle them in their own villages.
Following this appeal the Divisional Secretary for Thirukovil, Mr.S. Amalanathan, sent a letter to the Commanding Officer of the Special Task Force (STF) based in the area, seeking his permission to resettle the families in their own villages. The refugee families were displaced from the villages of Thangavelauthapuram, Kanchchikudichcha Aaru, Sagamam and Alikambai during the violence of the early 1990's. Since that time the families have been living in four camps in the Thirukovil division. Thirukovil is a large ancient Tamil village in the south eastern coast of the Amparai district in the south-east of the island.
