UPFA controlled Ea'raavoor UC suspends workers as political revenge

Minor grade employees working in Ea'raavoor Urban Council for about eighteen months have been suspended from service as they did not support the ruling United peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) at the last local authority elections held in March 17, according to a written complaint to the Batticaloa Regional Office of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL).

The affected workers have alleged in their complaint to the HRCSL that the newly elected Chairman of the Ea'raavoor UC Mr. Ali Zahir Mowlana has suspended them and filled the vacancies with his supporters.

The suspended workers were appointed in minor grade posts following an interview held on 09.08.2009.

”We are members of families beyond poverty line and had been drawing eight thousand rupees per month. We have not committed any offence other than the allegation that we failed to work for the ruling UPFA in the last local election. The HRCSL should intervene and order the Ea'raavoor UC to reinstate us," suspended workers stated in the complaint.
