The Sri Lankan Ministry of Housing, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities has started allocating houses for Sinhalese who are to be brought from the south under SL State-aided housing schemes constructed in traditional Tamil villages in the North and East. This became evident recently when the ministry allocated twenty four of thirty houses to Sinhalese, four for Muslims and two for Tamils in a traditional Tamil village Puththukudiyiruppu located in Tamil speaking Thampalakaamam Divisional Secretariat division of Trincomalee district.
Wimal Weerawanse, the leader of the National Freedom Front (NLF), a breakaway group of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is the SL Minister for Housing, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities. He laid the foundation stone for the said housing scheme recently. The matter was raised by Trincomalee district TNA parliamentarian R.Sampanthan recently in parliament. Mr. Sampanthan has also brought to the notice of the authorities concerned that under the ministry roads are cut in Tamil villages through rich paddy fields and residential lands from Thampalakaamam village to Chooran-kal and all over from Champoor to Kuchchave'li without any compensation being paid.
