Colombo schemes Sinhalicisation of Batticaloa with foreign funding: Ariyanethran MP

“Traditional Tamil villages in the North and East are being renamed in Sinhala and streets are named ‘Mawathas’ in Sinhala. When we were students, we learnt that Kantha'laay Tank was built by Tamil King Ku'lak-koaddan. But, today, our children have Tamil text books supplied by the Colombo government saying that Kantha'laay had been built by King Agbo, P.Ariyanethran, Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian said while addressing the annual festival of Kokkaddich-choalai thaan-thoan'ri Easvarar koayil in Paduvaankarai on Saturday.

Mahinda Rajapakse led government has been spending large sums of money received from foreign countries and international non-governmental organizations for political purposes, the MP said.

Main bridges in Panichchangkea'ni, Koaddaik-kallaa'ru and Periya-kallaa'ru in Batticaloa district were destroyed in 2004 tsunami.

In addition to the reconstruction of these bridges, the Batticaloa District Development Committee at its several meetings decided to construct the main bridge in Ma'nmunai that is connecting Paduvaankarai, Ezhuvaankarai, Kalladi and Oaddamaavadi at the instance of parliamentarians and concerned civil officials of the district.

But, there have been no progress when it comes to bridges within the district, connecting Tamil areas. The Rajapaksa government in Colombo has been deceiving the Tamil people that they would construct such bridges only on election platforms, he added.

Today Tamil ministers in the UPFA government refrain from uttering a word against when some of their Sinhalese colleagues desecrate the traditional Hindu culture in Saiva koayils. The Tamil ministers and the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province in the ruling party are without backbone to challenge the unruly behavior of the Sinhalese ministers who are opposed to Eezham Tamils, the MP further accused.
