Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi teachers also strike

[TamilNet, Monday, 19 July 1999, 03:32 GMT]
Teachers, principals and non-academic staff in the LTTE controlled districts of Killinochchi and Mullaitivu will also participate in the one-day token strike scheduled to be held on Monday, July 19, said Mr.T. Mahasivam, the Ceylon Tamil Teachers' Union General Secretary.

The CTTU has also made arrangements for the strike in Amparai, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Mannar and Jaffna, the six other districts of the North-east province, said the CTTU.

Teachers, principals and non-academic staff have been asked to send sick notes and stay at home on July 19.

In the meantime, the new Deputy Minister of Education, Reginald Cooray, has instructed the Chairman of the National Education Commission and the Director-General of National Institute of Education, Professor Lakshman Jayatilake, and the Commissioner General of the Educational Publication Department, E.W.Abeynaike, to be present at the talks with the delegation of the Ceylon Tamil Teachers' Union on July 21 at his office.

The CTTU has forwarded nine demands to the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

The demands include a repeal of the ban preventing the transport of computers and other educational equipment into areas held by the LTTE and the withdrawal of Tamil textbooks that portray a distorted view of history.
