Koṟ combination form of Kol: working in iron, blacksmith (Tamil, DED 2133); Kollaṉ: blacksmith (Tamil, DED 2133); Kolume: fire-pit, furnace (Kannada, DED 2133); probably related to Kol: (verb) to kill, destroy, afflict (Tamil, DED 2132); probably used in the sense, 'to reduce' in a furnace'.


Pulam and its variations, Pulavu, Pilavu and Pulō, mean a field, especially a cultivation field in Eezham Tamil place names.

They correspond to Pulam meaning, place, land, field, region, direction, quarter, country, arable land and rice field in Tamil/ Dravidian, including in its Caṅkam diction (DED 4303).

They also have the cognates Pola, Poḷa, Pala and Paḷa in Sinhala, meaning place, spot or a field as such an open-field market, country market etc. See box to note the similarity in word form between Kannada and Sinhala in this respect.
