Kuttiya is a seldom-found place name component in Sinhala.

Sorata Nayaka Thera's Sinhala dictionary gives two meanings for the word Kuttiya: one is Kætiya and the other is Goda.

Kuttiya, in the sense of Kætiya, means a piece, lump or slip, and in the context of place names, it means a piece or plot of land.

Kætiya and a related form Katuwa are commonly found place name components in Sinhala. Kaddi, Kaddu and Kaddai are the Eezham Tamil equivalents. See column on Thoalai-kaddi, Bora'lu-ketiya, for discussion on the Dravidian etymology of the terms.

In this sense of meaning, Kuttiya probably is a variation of Kætiya.

In another sense of meaning, Kuttiya is equated to Goda, which means a heap, mass, hill, mound, bank, rising ground at the edge of a water body etc. See box on Kuttiya 2 for cognates in Dravidian (DED 1682).

See column on Naalanda for discussion on Naa tree (Mesua ferrea, Naaga in Sanskrit/ Pali, CDIAL 7041; Naakam in Tamil), and see column on Pol-golla for etymological relations of Golla in Sinhala and Kollai in Tamil, meaning a forest or grove.
