International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) officials in Mallavi and Vavuniya visited the LTTE and SLA Mankulam defence lines today while both parties were engaged in de-mining their respective areas, sources said.
The de-mining took place in accordance with an agreement reached by both parties to open an access route through the Vanni. The access route is to be opened on Monday. Meanwhile traders in Vavuniya shut up shop demanding that an access route be opened to the LTTE controlled areas. The traders handed the Co-ordinating Officer of the SLA in Vavuniya a memorandum demanding immediate action to open an access route to the Vanni and a resumption of civilian transport and food to the LTTE controlled areas. The access route to the Vanni was closed by the SLA on May 26 when it launched Operation Rana Gossa.
