PA, UNP pressed over peace

The Sri Lankan Communist party and the Lanka Samasamaja party (LSSP) went in a procession and demonstrated today at Lipton's circus, near downtown Colombo, directing their demands at Sri Lanka's two main Political parties.

They demanded the ruling People's Alliance (PA) should abolish the Presidential system, as it had promised to do by July 1995 in its 1994 campaign and bring its "devolution package" before Parliament at once.

The protesters demanded the main opposition United National Party (UNP) support the government's devolution package.

Meanwhile, a group of Sri Lankan non governmental organizations (NGOs) also protested today at Lipton's circus roundabout demanding peace.

After the demonstration, the NGOs split into two groups.

One of the groups went to the President's residence at Temple Trees to submit a memorandum demanding that the Government should take steps towards establishing peace, while the other group went to the opposition and handed over a memorandum, making the same demands.
