"Posting unfair" - Courts told
[TamilNet, Monday, 16 August 1999, 15:52 GMT]
A fundamental rights case filed by five recently qualified medical officers objecting to being posted in the north-eastern parts of the island was taken up for hearing before Sri Lanka's supreme court today.
The petitioners say that the Director of Health Services has posted 102 of the 164 who graduated as doctors this year from the medical colleges of Sri Lanka to those areas and that this is unfair. The counsel appearing on behalf of the Director of health services said that there is a severe shortage of medical officers in the hospitals of the northern and eastern parts of the island as few doctors in government service are willing to work there. He told the bench that Director of Health Services, however, is reconsidering the postings now. The court postponed the case until September 8 in view of the reconsideration of the postings by the Department of Health.
