A Corporal of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) was killed in a mortar attack by the Liberation Tigers on the Vaakarai camp last night around 8.30 p.m, said sources. Vaakarai is a coastal village 64 kilometers north of Batticaloa.
The corporal killed in last night's attack was identified as Maithripala. The Tigers had fired four shells on the camp from their positions west of Vaakarai. One had exploded near a sentry post killing Maithripala. A lone suicide bomber killed Major T.G.J.V Karunanayaka inside the defence perimeter of the Vaakarai camp on August 9. The large hinterland west of Vaakarai and the coastal areas north of it are controlled by the Liberation Tigers. The detachment is the northernmost point of the coastal parts of the Batticaloa district which are under the control of the SLA.
