Ki'linochchi protest demanding justice for enforced disappeared reaches 366th day

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 20 February 2018, 20:17 GMT]
Grassroots organisations from the North, solidarity groups from the South, politicians from various parties and representatives of the families of enforced disappeared in the eight districts of North-East joined hands with the continuous protesters in Ki'linochchi as their protest reached 366th day on Tuesday. Seven mothers have died searching for the loved ones while the UN Human Rights Council was giving time and space for the SL State to escape accountability, the protesters accused.

Ms Kalaranjani, who represents the protesters in Ki'linochchi said they urge the International Community, which failed in its duty to stop the genocidal onslaught in 2009, to at least make the SL State provide an official response in an accountable manner.

The SL State should authentically state whether those handed over to the SL military at the end of the genocidal war and those filtered away from the people and detained in secret camps were alive or not.

If the SL military had claimed the lives of those detained, the SL State should release details on how, when and where the SL military executed them along with the details of those who were in the chain of command of the mass executions, Kalaranjani said.

While the SL State is openly dodging accountability and the victims' families demanding answers were suffering through continuous their protests, the UNHRC was giving a 2-year extension for SL State making the leaders of SL government to continue with their deceptions, she said.

The Office for Missing Persons was another means for dodging accountability, and the global human rights community should not get waylaid by such eyewash measures, she further said.
