SL Navy dumps garbage polluting Champoor lands[TamilNet, Thursday, 01 March 2018, 16:37 GMT]The occupying SL Navy, which has seized thousands of acres of lands for its naval training base called SLNS Vidura, is dumping garbage into the agricultural areas of resettled people outside the military zone, causing environmental and health hazards. At the same time, lousy toilet drainage from SLNS Vidura base is also polluting the drinking water of resettled people, health workers among the resettled Tamils in Champoor told TamilNet. Eezham Tamil farmers are entirely dependent on seasonal rains for irrigation complain that the waste is being carried into their farmlands. The garbage contains plastic wastes, glasses, liquor bottles, needles, medicinal waste etc., causing pollution danger, resettled Tamil farmers said. While dumping the waste in agricultural lands and polluting the groundwater, the SL Navy is using modern equipment to filter potable water for the occupying soldiers, the health workers who didn't wish to be named said. The attitude of the occupying SL Navy would not have been like this had it been a Sinhala area, they added. The people of Champoor are now facing the danger of water and food pollution due to the scale of militarisation and poor waste management by the occupying Sinhala military. Chronology:
