Sinhalicisation targets Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal and Nanthik-kadal

[TamilNet, Thursday, 28 May 2020, 22:03 GMT]
Before 2009, there were no Buddhist viharas in Vadduvaakal and the areas surrounding the lagoon of Nanthik-kadal in Mullaiththeevu. In 2010, a Buddhist vihara was erected at Vadduvaakal, especially after the genocidal onslaught in 2009. Occupying Colombo's Sinhala colonisation was aimed at permanently wedging the demographic contiguity of the Northern and Eastern Provinces by seizing the coastal stretch from Kokkuth-thoduvaay to Kokku'laay and the interior lands. Now, the move is systematically expanded also to include the last tract of the coast, where the genocidal onslaught took place, namely Mu'l'li-vaaykkal and the banks of Nanthik-kadal, says Thurairajah Ravikaran, a former councillor of Nothern Province.

Vadduvaakal vihara has come under the control of the SL Archaeology Department. The SL military has seized more than one hundred acres of lands surrounding the Buddhist vihara.

There is also a base for SL Navy, which has seized 617 acres of coastal lands.

The SL Department for Wildlife Conservation has seized more than 4,142 hectares of lands since January 2011. Similarly, around 10,230 acres of lands were taken by the same department along the banks of Nanthik-kadal.

Colombo systematically targets all the four corners of Nanthik-kadal lagoon for Sinhala colonisation, Mr Ravikaran said.

SL Navy, Archaeology Department and the Wildlife Conservation Department have jointly targeted Vadduvaakal for Sinhalicisation, he said.

468 Tamil families have managed to resettle in Mu'l'livaaykkaal East. 271 Tamil families are living in Vadduvaakal.

At the same time, the so-called Mahaweli System L was choking the territorial integrity of the Tamil homeland at the provincial border across the north and south of Kokku'laay lagoon, the former NPC Councillor said.

The grassroots organisations in Mullaiththeevu have urged Tamil activists, politicians and media to expose the demographic and cultural genocide of Nanthik-kadal and Vadduvaakal.
