Reconstruction work of the Alfred Duraiappa stadium in Jaffna town was officially inaugurated today by the Sri Lankan army's Jaffna town commander Brig. Susantha Mendis.
The brigadier is said to have obtained one million rupees from the ministry of sports for the reconstruction of the stadium. The work has been entrusted to the Jaffna Municipal council (M.C). The M.C is expected to put up the balance funds which may be required to finish the reconstruction from its resources said sources in Jaffna town. There move to rebuild the stadium while much of the town is yet to be repaired has caused resentment among residents in Jaffna. Recently, moves to rebuild 1125 desperately needed houses and 111 wells by an NGO consortium were stopped by the Jaffna GA who said there were no funds available for this purpose. A large number of people in the peninsula are languishing in refugee camps or staying in the houses of relatives and friends as their own homes were destroyed in heavy fighting that took place when the Sri Lankan army moved into the area in late 1995.
