State Counsel, Yasantha Kothagoda, said earlier today that Police will begin recording statements today from the 20 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) officers who have been named by the key witnesses during the investigations into the Chemmani mass graves.
The witnesses have named 20 SLA officers who are allegedly involved in the arrests, torture and murder of hundreds of Tamil civilians in Jaffna. The site was brought to public attention after SLA Corporal Somaratna Rajapaksha, the convicted killer of schoolgirl Krishanthy Kumarasamy, revealed the existence of the mass graves. Around 400 bodies are believed to be buried at the site. The excavation of mass graves began on July 15 and 15 skeletons have so far been recovered.
