Seven Sri Lankan army soldiers were killed and six wounded when the Liberation Tigers attacked an army vehicle in Murunkan, in the Mannar district this morning around 8.15 a.m.
Sources said that the LTTE had ambushed a bus transporting soldiers from the Murunkan army camp to the Murunkan town at a spot called Koilkulam on the Mannar-Vavuniya road. The Mannar-Vavuniya road was captured by the SLA last February, but the LTTE controls vast areas north of it. The LTTE have carried out a number of recent attacks in the area. On October 18, eight SLA troops were killed when the Tigers overran Murunkan police station for the second time in a week - 4 soldiers and 8 policemen were killed in the previous attack on October 12. The LTTE said 6 SLA soldiers were killed in two of their operations near Murunkan in early August.
