Suspected members of the Liberation Tigers threw a grenade at a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sentry point at Aariya Kulam junction in the high security zone of the Jaffna town around 6.30 p.m. yesterday evening, sources said.
SLA sources said the army did not suffer any casualties, as the sentry was not manned at the time of the attack. The SLA cordoned off the area and conducted search operation said sources in the northern town. Meanwhile a youth who escaped from a camp of the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), a paramilitary group operating alongside the SLA, and surrendered at the Kopai police station on September 15, was produced before the Jaffna District Courts yesterday. The youth, Junaithene Ajeene, alias Parath, from Kaluthavalai in the Matale district, appealed to the court to send him to Colombo. The court ruling is expected Tuesday, said sources.
