Trincomalee officials in embezzlement probe

The Lankadeepa, the Sinhala daily with the largest circulation in Sri Lanka said today that the the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Sri Lankan Police is grilling seven senior government officials in Trincomalee for embezzling two million rupees from funds claiming that their properties had been destroyed by the Liberation Tigers.
The officials had submitted forged documents to show that the LTTE had attacked and destroyed their houses and property - most of these officials are Sinhalese. The CID has now ascertained there was no such attack on civilian property by the Liberation Tigers as stated in the compensation claims of the officials. Senior CID officer T.V Sumanasekera is investigating the case said the Lankadeepa.
