Security has been tightened in Kalmunai in the southeastern district of Ampara where the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is planning to hold its 16th annual convention at Santhankerny stadium on Sunday, November 21 said sources.
The Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunga has been invited as the chief guest for the convention but is not expected to attend the function. However, she is expected to make a speech over a satellite link, SLMC sources said. Meanwhile the Kalmunai bus terminal which is close to the stadium was demolished by unidentified men Thursday night sources said. The bus terminal has been shifted to a location close to the library in the town from this morning the sources said. The bus terminal was planned to be moved to this new location. However, high ranking officials have objected to the relocation, the sources added. Informed sources in Kalmunai said that there is a strong speculation in the town that the bus terminal might have been demolished by SLMC activists for security reasons, in view of the party's convention.
