AG clears student release

The Sri Lankan Attorney General says that he has no objection to the release of the Jaffna universiy student Selvanayagam Suganthan, now in remand on the orders of Jaffna Magistrate, court sources said Sunday.

The Jaffna Magistrate's court is awaiting for the Attorney General's directive in this regard, in writing, sources further said.

Selvanayagam Suganthan was arrested on October 25 by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).

When university students started boycotting classes demanding the release of Suganthan, the Police produced him before the Jaffna Magistrate who then remanded him till January 27, next year.

Meanwhile, Miss Shanthi Abimannasingham, Attorney-at-Law on behalf of Suganthan, wrote to the Attorney General appealing for his release.

Now it is learnt, that the Attorney General has issued a directive to the magistrate stating that he has no objection to the release of the student.

Court sources in Jaffna expect the AG's directive on Tuesday.

Once the AG's directive in writing, is received, Suganthan would be released, according to Miss Abimannasingham, Attorney-at-Law.
