Norway's ambassador visits Jaffna

The Norway's ambassador to Sri Lankan John Westborg will return this afternoon after a two day official visit to the Jaffna peninsula. The ambassador went on Wednesday to Jaffna.

The ambassadar visited the Ceynor fishing net factory (now defunct) and the Ceynor ice factory (also defunct) in Kurunagar yesterday.

Fishermen in these parts handed over an appeal to the ambassador requesting Norway's assistance to restart the factories and resuscitate the once thriving fishing industry here.

The Ceynor fishing net factory's buildings are currently used by the Sri Lankan army to house and screen people who cross over from the Vanni.

He also went to several coastal villages southeast of the Jaffna town to assess the conditions there.

The ambassador had discussions with officials at the Jaffna Kachcheri.The GA was not present in the Kachcheri yesterday as he was away in Colombo for a meeting at the Presidential secretariat.

Sources said that the Norway ambassador was scheduled to visit Pt. Pedro today but no details of the program were available.

An official at the Royal Norwegian embassy in Colombo confirmed the visit but declined to give any details of the ambassador's program in Jaffna.
