School teacher shot dead

A school teacher identified as S. Raveenthiran was shot dead by the SLA in Kaithady in Jaffna last night around 9.30 p.m. The Chavakachcheri Police brought his body to the Jaffna hospital mortuary today claiming that it was that of an LTTE activist.

Jaffna hospital sources said that he appeared to be forty years old.

Other sources said that his wife had come late in the evening to claim his body but had left as it was too late in the evening to initiate procedures for doing so.

Meanwhile, residents in Jaffna town said today that Sri Lankan army soldiers manning sentry points near Somasundaram Road beat up several civilians passing that way last night following the grenade attack on an army cum Police sentry near the Jaffna railway station.
